Christmas Eve is the day that Swedes celebrate the Christmas holiday. Your day will start with a traditional Swedish Christmas breakfast buffet. As you approach the restaurant your senses will be overwhelmed with the smell of fresh baked bread, holiday porridge and gingerbread cookies. The STF Abisko Mountain Station will release their full holiday program a few weeks before Christmas and we will provide more details as they are made available. After breakfast your adventure kicks into overdrive as you head out for an exciting morning spent dog sledding! This two hour journey takes you into areas of the National Park that you could never reach without the assistance of your dog team and gives you the chance to see and photograph the Arctic wilderness in ways that you never thought possible! Approximately half way through the journey you will stop and rest so you have the opportunity to take pictures and play with the huskies. After an afternoon of rest or exploring the National Park on your own you will enjoy another gourmet meal in our restaurant and then join your guide for your second Lights Over Lapland photo tour. Your guide will lead you to a new and exciting destination in the National Park so that you will have an opportunity to see and photograph the northern lights from an entirely new vantage point.
On Christmas day you will have an opportunity to enjoy two of the most iconic activities in Sweden – a visit to the world famous ICEHOTEL during the day and the award winning Aurora Sky Station by night. Your trip starts with a scenic drive through the mountains and into the forests of magical Swedish Lapland. On arrival at the ICEHOTEL you will receive your ticket before joining your expert ICEHOTEL representative for a guided tour of the worlds first ICEHOTEL. Marvel at the amazing individually sculpted Art Suites, Ice Rooms and Ice Church whilst learning about how this one-of-a-kind hotel is designed and created each year. Finally head to the Ice Bar to enjoy one of the coolest drinks you will ever have! Following the tour you will have the chance to enjoy lunch in the comfortable restaurant, drink a coffee in the stylish bar or buy some souvenirs from your experience at this truly amazing hotel. After your visit to the Icehotel you will return to Abisko where you can explore the National Park or spend time with friends and family in one of the many scenic locations around the lodge. After a lazy afternoon at the lodge you will head to the Aurora Sky Station for an incredible Christmas evening under the northern lights. Upon arrival at the chair lift you will be outfitted with high quality Arctic gear including a pair of warm overalls and boots. After dressing you will enjoy a ride in Sweden’s longest chair lift to the Aurora Sky Station. As you slowly climb the mountain in silence, the darkness and the beauty of Abisko National Park will begin to awaken your senses. As your eyes adjust to the darkness of the area you will see more stars than you ever thought possible and it is not uncommon to see your first aurora on the way up the mountain. At some point during your visit you will be invited to the Aurora Sky Station’s exhibition where a member of the friendly and educated staff will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about the northern lights. After the informative tour in the aurora exhibition you will be led outside where your guide will help you discover the best way to see the aurora borealis. After the tour is over you will have approximately three and a half hours to spend on the side of Mt. Noulja searching for the auroras. The memories you make (and capture with your camera) are sure to be one of the best Christmas experiences you will ever have! What could be a better Christmas gift than a memory and a photograph that will last a lifetime?
