Adrian Rödel
I grew up in Germany, but some of my earliest memories of travelling are from Scandinavia. My family spent a lot of time in the North when I was a child, and I think that’s where my fascination with wild places really started. There was always something about the endless forests, the mountains and the feeling that you could simply keep going and find something new.
In 2019, I came to Abisko for the first time to explore the fascinating nature and experience the northern lights. I had seen plenty of pictures before, but standing beneath the Arctic sky was something completely different. Watching the aurora move above the mountains, in the middle of the silence, made me realise that I didn’t just want to photograph places like this – I wanted to experience them.
Since this moment I experienced many places in Scandinavia but I always returned to Abisko.
I’ve always felt most comfortable outside, but the further north I travel, the more I understand why I keep coming back. There is something about the Arctic that is difficult to put into words. The light, the silence, the vastness – and on the right night, a sky that suddenly comes alive.
Now I’m very happy to be back in Abisko, this time as part of the Lights Over Lapland team.
