This spectacular 3-4 km trekking adventure starts at 1:30 PM which means that you will get to see Abisko and the surrounding area in some of the most beautiful light of the day. During the early part of the season, you will get to witness the incredible splendour that can only be seen in the Arctic as the day transitions to night. Tours that take place early in the season will give you an opportunity to see the area in daylight as well as the beautiful Arctic glow that leads to twilight. As the season progresses, you will get to witness incredible sunsets that lead to dusk. Later in the season, the mountains and the incredible Arctic scenery may be glowing in spectacular sunlight for the full duration of the trip. Depending upon the time of the year, if the conditions are just right you may even be able to see the northern lights glowing above the horizon in the second half of the tour.
Prior to the start of the tour, your guide will work together with the rest of the professionals at Lights Over Lapland to choose the route that you take on the day based on what the sky looks like, snow and ice conditions, the weather forecast and countless other metrics that are designed to ensure that we take the most beautiful route possible, each and every time we go out. Using this information, we will choose from one of the following routes:
- A hike across the frozen surface of lake Tornetrask to a small island followed by a visit to our teepee.
- A hike to Stornabben, a perfectly positioned lookout point with panoramic views of Abisko National Park and the surrounding valley.
- The classic Abisko River Canyon in Abisko National Park with a visit to a fire pit along the shoreline of Lake Tornetrask
Regardless of which route we take, one thing is for certain: your guide will take you to places that are spectacularly beautiful! During your adventure you will see lots of incredible Arctic scenery, soaring mountain peaks, and all of the epic views that make Abisko National Park such an incredible place. If time allows, your guide will light a fire, serve a warm drink and a light snack. All of our guides are highly trained and will share their extensive knowledge about tracks left behind by our local wildlife, local indigenous people of the region and what it is like to live in the Arctic.
While it is not guaranteed, you may have a chance to see beautiful animals during this trip such as reindeer, mountain hare, foxes, a full range of birds and the ever-majestic Scandinavian moose if luck is on your side! Be sure to bring a camera as this trip gives you an up close and personal experience in all of the most beautiful locations in Abisko! Book your incredibly scenic hike with the best guides in Abisko today!
All routes will be led at a very relaxed pace and usually take between 1.5 and 2 hours to complete. Most of the trip happens on well-trodden ground but there can be inclines and loose/drifted snow during the hike. Your guide will be there to help navigate and walking poles can be provided if requested. Please let us know if you have any physical limitations that would make it difficult for you to keep up with a group of ten guests and one guide. The age limit of guests joining our tour is a minimum of 7 years old, due to the length and amount of time you will be out hiking.

Can my child ride in a sled behind me for the Hike?
The minimum age for this activity is 7 years old, and all participants must be able to walk independently. For safety reasons, we cannot accept children under the age of 7 or those who need to be carried or assisted while walking. The terrain and conditions may be slippery, uneven, or snowy, and it’s important that everyone is able to move safely on their own throughout the tour.
Can I bring a dog on the Afternoon Hike?
While we absolutely love dogs, they are not allowed to join our group hikes. This policy helps ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all guests. Dogs are allowed in Abisko National Park as long as they’re kept on a leash, but since we can’t take responsibility for pets during group tours, they’re not permitted on our regular hikes.
However, if you’re staying at STF Abisko Turiststation and book a Private Morning Hike (without transportation), you’re very welcome to bring your dog along!
Do you offer pick-up from Kiruna?
Due to the long distance (almost 100KM), we do not offer pick-up in Kiruna. If you wish to join the hike, we highly recommend you book your stay in Abisko.
I’m driving from Narvik or Kiruna. Where should I meet the group?
If you are driving, the best place to meet is by the main door of the STF Abisko Turiststation. Please park by Naturum, in the larger parking area. Additional parking is available across the road, by the train station. The hotel address is: STF Abisko Turiststation, 981 07 Abisko. Your guide will meet you there at 13:15 PM.
Please make sure you leave with plenty of time to spare as the group will not be able to wait if you are delayed. It’s also worth noting that the road between Narvik and Abisko might close in extreme weather. A refund is not possible if you miss the tour.
