Originally from West Germany, my journey to the Arctic North began in an unexpected place – Florence, Italy.

I met a one of our guides here at Lights over Lapland named Miquel at Piazzale Michelangelo, standing in front of his van, and we struck up a conversation. Through him, I was introduced to the idea of working in Abisko National Park as a guide and photographer. After visiting as a tourist, I fell in love with the cold, raw beauty of Swedish Lapland and the warmth of its people. It wasn’t long before I decided to call Abisko home and dedicate myself to sharing this remarkable place with others.

What captivated me was the ever-changing landscape – the majestic Lake Torneträsk, transforming with the seasons, and the breathtaking Abisko National Park, with its towering mountains, the canyon, the waterfalls (frozen or flowing) and rich wildlife. I always look forward to the winter months when the lake freezes over, creating stunning ice sculptures along the shore, perfect for photographing. And of course, there’s the magic of the northern lights, which I first saw here in Abisko with a close friend. That moment, along with witnessing a powerful sun storm in Iceland, sparked my fascination with auroras.

The unpredictable wildlife is another reason I love living here. I fondly remember one time when I was heading to pick up guests from the hostel in Abisko Östra, and just five meters away, a mother moose and her calf were casually relaxing, chewing on shoots. These moments remind me of how connected we are to nature in this remote part of the world.

When I’m not guiding, I spend my time hiking, photographing wildlife, ice climbing, and riding snowmobiles – especially while chasing the northern lights. In most places, I feel a constant inner flame, but here, the cold, the stillness of nature, soothe my mind like nowhere else – Abisko is truly a magical place!
