The Sami & Reindeer Experience (Dec-March)
The Sami & Reindeer Experience
Take a day trip to the Sámi village of Rávttas, 45 minutes east of Abisko and experience a glimpse of the traditional lifestyle of the reindeer people.
You will also have an opportunity to enjoy a short ride on a traditional sled behind a reindeer just as the Sámi people have done for hundreds of years.
After your ride you will have a chance to learn how to identify different reindeer in the herd based on personal characteristics and behaviour. All of this excitement will most certainly make you hungry – your guide will welcome you to step inside one of our traditional Sámi lavvus (teepee) where you will be served a fresh and delicious meal around an open fire.
This glimpse into traditional Sámi life will most likely be one of the highlights of your visit to Abisko!
- It is important that you wear warm clothes, hats and gloves as well as warm insulated winter boots for your feet.
- This activity is provided in cooperation with a local reindeer herder. It can sometimes be hard to predict the exact timing of when to gather and separate the herds. On very rare occasions our partner may need to attend to the herd with short notice and thus cancel the activity. In such an event you will have the following options:
1. You can choose to receive a credit of 2295 SEK that can be applied to any of Visit Abisko’s activities or transfers.
2. You can choose to receive a full refund of 2295 SEK.
Round trip transportation from all hotels in Abisko and Björkliden, guiding services provided by a local Sami, lunch served in a traditional Sami tent (Please let us know of any allergies or dietary restrictions), short sled ride behind the reindeer.
Meeting point for the pick up will be the reception area at your hotel. Please be ready to leave 5 minutes before the starting time of the tour. Please also note that the pickup time may be up to 30 minutes later depending on the pickup locations of other participants.
